Allez les Bleus: Favorite French Wines

This coming weekend is packed with French events: Bastille Day, The Tour de France and of course, the World Cup final on Sunday. Get your baguettes and berets ready.

I’m a self-proclaimed francophile. It’s no secret that French wines are far and away my favorite wines on the planet, and with all of the French events this weekend I felt it necessary to round up a list my current faves from the shelves. Hey, any excuse to drink French wine is OK with me.

Vive la France!

Forever and ever and always, Champagne. If I had to take one thing on a desert island with me, it would be Champagne.

Pierre Peters Blanc de Blancs, $58.99

Billecart-Salmon Brut Rose Magnum   $179

Mousse Fils Cuvee Noire Reserve $44.99

It’s going to be 100 degrees this weekend, you need some rose in your life.

Domaine Fontsainte Gris de Gris, $12.99    Les Rocailles Savoie Rose, $15.99

Domaine Tempier Bandol Rose, $39.99

So many white wines, so little time. This adage always rings true for me with French wines, there is just such a breadth of diversity to French whites. You can find one to fit every palate, every budget, every mood, every meal.

Mure Clos Saint Landelin Grand Cru Riesling, Alsace, $39.99

Domaine Cheverny Sauvignon Blanc, Loire, $14.99

Domaine Ostertag Sylvaner, Alsace, $26.99

Chateau La Rame Blanc, Bordeaux, $16.99

Domaine du Bagnol, Cassis, $17.99

Danile-Etienne DeFaix Chablis 1er Cru 2003,$51.99

Jean-Marc Pillot Chassagne Montrachet 1er Cru ‘Les Fairendes’, Burgundy, $89.99

Since it’s still summer, I’ve selected lighter-bodied reds (exception: one Bordeaux that I just had to include because it makes me so happy). Drink these with a slight chill and un ham-bur-ger.

Chanrion Cote-de-Brouilly Beaujolais, $18.99     Chateau le Puy St.Emilion, Bordeaux $47.99

Maxime Magnon La Demarrante, Corbieres $26.99

Domaine de la Chanteleuserie Bourgueil, Loire, $18.99
