Top 100 Wines of 2017

Each year publications like Wine Enthusiast and Wine Spectator release their top 100 wine lists. These lists differ by publication. Wine Spectator just releases 1 list, while Wine Enthusiast separates their lists into ‘Best Buys’ and ‘Collector’s Wine’. Here, we break down those lists for you and let you know what’s available at DEP’s.

Note: often, the wines represented on the lists aren’t available for a number of reasons. Possibly we have a different vintage than the vintage reviewed (either older or newer). Some wines are winery only or mailing list only. Or, the wine simply isn’t distributed in the Cincinnati market.

#1  Duckhorn Merlot ‘Three Palms Vineyard’ 2014 $98  SOLD OUT
(12 bottles available you must email to reserve)
“Merlot is back, and deservedly so. Despite the comic derision heaped on the variety in the popular film  Sideways, Merlot can make extraordinary wines in California. Duckhorn’s Three Palms bottling in the excellent 2014 vintage is ample proof.”
#2    K Syrah  Powerline Estate 2014  $42.99  SOLD OUT
(13 bottles available you must email to reserve.)
95 Points”A knockout Syrah, precise and impeccably built but explosive with personality. Smoky roasted meat and floral blackberry aromas combine with bold, supple flavors of dark plum, pepper and licorice. The tannins are big but polished. Drink now through 2024.”
#4 Casanova di Neri Brunello di Montalcino 2012  SOLD OUT
(2 cases available you must email to reserve)
95 Points “Effusive aromas and flavors of raspberry, cherry, floral, mineral and tobacco are at the center of this linear, vibrant red. Well-structured, this offers terrific length on the sinewy finish. Best from 2020 through 2035.”
#5 Chateau de Saint Cosme Gigondas 2015  $40.99  SOLD OUT
(3 cases available you must email to reserve)
95 Points “A textbook version of the brawny side of Gigondas, this offers a grippy alder bass line underneath layers of dark currant and fig fruit, while lots of tobacco, rosemary and bay leaf fill in throughout. Muscular and energetic, this is built for the cellar. Best from 2019 through 2030.”
